If you’re old enough to remember the Carter Administration like me, you’re old enough to have witnessed the birth of modern day r
ecycling in the U.S.A. I’m glad – and proud – that we’re now a nation where recycling is as common as an eight track tape player was in an AMC Gremlin back when Jimmy was president. Today, more than 80% of U.S. households have easy access to locally based programs for recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum.
But recycling isn’t just about everyday household items any more. Nonprofit organizations and specialized businesses are springing up everywhere to recycle almost everything imaginable. Here are 10 recycling oddities that might surprise you.

Organicare not only wants to improve the lives of our customers, but we want to improve the world as a whole. Each year, Organicare will give a portion of its proceeds to an organization that improves the world. This year, Organicare will be donating to Rescue a Million whose innovative program simultaneously saves two of the earth’s most precious resources – children and the environment.
__________________________________________________
Mission: To educate, inspire, and empower millions of people to invest their time, talents, and resources to save our earth’s future-children and the environment.
Rescue a Million has set a goal to plant a million trees and rescue a million children from poverty by the year 2015. We need your help! Please consider joining with us to reach this worthy goal! Rescue a Million is planting a million trees to rescue a million children from poverty.
Each tree planted and each child rescued is an important part of our mission to save the earth’s most precious resources- children and the environment. Working closely with various project partners, Rescue a Million is planting trees to benefit the environment and donating money to provide micro-credit loans to help entire families begin their journey out of poverty. Many of the trees we plant will be grown for lumber, in addition to our reforestation, conservation, and community development programs. When these trees are ready for harvest in seven to ten years, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the lumber will be donated back to the Rescue a Million, providing additional funds to plant more trees and help more children through our self-perpetuating program.
Goal It is a sad fact that many children on the earth live day to day in such extreme poverty that they are left with little hope of ever reaching adulthood. Rescue a Million’s work helps overcome the devastating effects of poverty that are taking the lives of 22 children every minute. There is also little hope for children, or even ourselves, if we allow our planet to be destroyed through irresponsible behavior. Rescue a Million’s work helps prevent the destruction of our earth’s rainforests that are disappearing at the rate of one acre per second.
Exercising wise stewardship over the earth and extending a hand to help other members of our human family is essential if we want to live in peace and prosperity in our increasingly global society. The symbiotic relationship that exists between ourselves as humans and our environment cannot be overlooked. Rescue a Million’s self-perpetuating program emphasizes this symbiotic relationship as it simultaneously overcomes challenges that threaten the future of children and the environment.

There is no need to exchange your car if you can take advantage of these four easy ways to improve your fuel efficiency!
1. Ensure your tires are properly inflated: for every 2 PSI (pounds per square inch) your tires are under inflated, you could be losing up to 1% of your fuel efficiency. That can really add up; keep an eye on the tire pressure gauge!
2. Pack light: don’t pack so much on road trips that you need a rooftop carrier. Decreasing the aerodynamic shape of a vehicle decreases fuel efficiency.
3. Take the lead out of your foot: we’ve tweeted it, blogged it, and said it … slow down and save gas – it’s as easy as that (not to mention safer!). Maximum gas efficiency is reached around 55 mph. You can save almost 15% of your gas if you stay at 60 mph instead of channeling Speed Racer and going 80 mph.
4. Take a load off: you can increase your fuel efficiency by lightening your car (and maybe your belly!). Every extra 100 lbs your vehicle has to propel down the street, you lose 2% of your fuel efficiency. Time to get on the treadmill and clean out the trunk!
5. Switch to synthetic motor oil: while we hate to advocate synthetic motor oil, its use in your engine could increase your fuel efficiency anywhere from 5-10%. That isn’t too bad at all!

You’ve heard warnings about BPAs lately – here is a quick explanation of what they are and why they are bad.
Bisphenol A (abbreviated BPA) is a compound commonly used in plastic products. Many are not aware of the extent BPAs can be found around the house in “sports equipment, medical and dental devices, dental fillings and sealants, eyeglass lenses, CDs and DVDs, and household electronics. Epoxy resins containing bisphenol A are used as coatings on the inside of almost all food and beverage cans” (source). Due to their large presence in the home, are harder to avoid than previously thought!
The danger of contact with BPAs has been noted since the 1930s but little has been done to make it know until lately. BPAs are dangerous because, once in the body, they mimic the body’s natural sex hormones. Though health officials have not ruled these gravely dangerous to humans yet, they have been found to cause irreparable damage to animals in lab tests.
Here are four tips to help reduce the amount of BPAs your family encounters:
1. Limit your use of canned food and beverages; the less you use the lower your intake.
2. Seek the “BPA-Free” assurance. Many products will ensure that their packaging is BPA-free, you just need to look for it.
3. Watch the symbols indicating the “type” of plastic your containers are. #7 and #3 plastics are more likely to leak BPA.
4. Switch from plastic to stainless steel or aluminium.

Formaldehyde doesn’t even sound appetizing … but did you know that it is in many skincare products and numerous household products?
“Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical … that is commonly used as an industrial fungicide, germicide, and disinfectant, and as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories.” (source) Most of this chemical’s presence outside can be traced back to engine emissions, but traces found inside your house are a whole different story.
In skincare products, formaldehyde is used to ensure that bacteria does not contaminate the product (it is used much like parabens). Avoiding bacteria is a good step to take, but what are you risking by allowing ingredients like formaldehyde into your body? This ingredient has been noted as a KNOWN human carcinogen and has been given a 10/10 on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep website’s hazard scale. “According to study published in 2004 in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, parabens have been found in tissue samples from human breast tumors.” (source)
The following ingredients have been linked to the presence of formaldehyde and should be avoided: bronopol, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantion, imidazolidinyl urea, and quaternium 15.

… for that reason, Organicare uses only the purest and most natural ingredients in its products – and has the USDA Organic seal on each one to prove it.
Each year, women absorb over 10 lbs. of product (including lotion, hair products, cosmetics, and fragrances) and that 10 lbs. of product delivers an average of 168 chemicals to our body EACH DAY! To make these numbers a bit more intimidating, many recent studies are finding that the buildup of some of these chemicals can be carcinogenic over time.
Not only does Organicare want to keep your body safe, but we want to look out for the rest of the world, too. Our packaging is made with 80% post consumer waste in a wind and hyrdo-powered, carbon neutral facility. Each year, Organicare will donate a portion of its proceeds to an organization committed to solving ecological and social issues.
